"Eating Healthy Is Just Sooo Expensive” (Or Is It?)

Some people believe that eating healthy is so expensive, but that simply is not true: eating healthy might cost you money but eating unhealthy can cost you your life!

Eating healthy is possible if you are on a budget. Eating healthy can be cheaper sometimes, so choose wisely the foods you are eating. There are many nutritious foods and they can be stocked easily on a flexible budget.

The following tips will enable you to get your groceries on a budget while your family enjoys a healthier diet.

Walk the perimeter of the store: This is where you will find produce, meat, seafood, and eggs (just ignore the bakery section). When you are purchasing real food, you really don’t need to be concerned with labels because there are none. The inner aisles where you will find packaged foods and some gems such as cooking oils and fats, spices, and some other good options.

Become a food label detective: Read labels very carefully and watch out for hidden sugar. Reducing the amount of sugar in your diet is a quick way to reduce calories without cutting out a lot of important nutrients. When examining food labels for added sugar, look for the words corn sweetener, corn syrup, or corn syrup solids as well as high-fructose or fruit juice concentrate. Also look for other words ending in “ose” (like sucrose, lactose, maltose & etc). The nutrition facts table on package foods gives you information on total calories and 13 core nutrients. Use the amount of food and the % daily value to choose healthier food products.

Meal plan before shopping: Avoid impulse buying by making a grocery list and sticking to it! Know what foods are in season, the cost will be lower and the vegetables will be fresher. Click here for a free printable Meal Planner
